Young literature, the press and the public were passionate about this new literary society, which awarded its Goncourt Prize for the first time at Drouant on 31st of October 1914 (because of the outbreak of war, this 1914 prize was not handed over until 1916).
Every year, the ten members of the "Académie Goncourt" deliberate at the Drouant restaurant at lunchtime. The laureate is chosen among the 4 finalists on the first floor, in the elegant Goncourt private dinning, as tradition dictates.
This prestigious literary prize is announced by the General Secretary of the Academy, on the steps of the famous wrought iron staircase, created by Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, in front of hundred of journalists.
Following the announcement, the laureate is expected to join the academician’s table to savour a meal with them and enjoy a moment of sharing and transmission.
